Packaging Jewelry Sales

All types of jewelry, top of the line or fashion costume jewelry should be stored and packaged for sale appropriately. Jewelry gift boxes are always a good option for packaging and mailing sold jewelry pieces. Organza bags is another beautiful way to “wrap up” sold jewelry at retail outlets or for mailing.

If you are mailing a jewelry package, be sure to secure the gift box or organza bag within bubble wrap and a bubble wrap envelope. If you don’t, there is a good chance the package will arrive damaged.

I received a package of stud earrings once from Bulgaria that were beyond repair by the time they got to me in the mail. Some of the stud posts were bent over and I could not bend them back straight. Other stud posts were completely broken off the backs of the earrings. The package was not securely packaged in bubble wrap, just rolled up in some tissue paper and placed in a plain envelope. Needless to say, I was not a happy recipient of this package and neither will your customers be happy to receive damaged jewelry. There are ways to securely send jewelry through the mail and it pays to take the time to send a secure package.

If you are gift giving jewelry, a jewelry gift box to fit the piece adds the final touch. The gift box is a much better presentation than just tossing a bracelet or pair of earrings in the bottom of a gift paper bag. The gift box helps to make the gift look more special. There is just an added sense of “excitement” to be handed a beautifully wrapped box rather than a paper bag with some tissue stuffed inside and somewhere among all the tissue is your gift of jewelry. It is more of a “surprise” to find your gift from within a box.

There are specific types of open display boxes for jewelry retailers that can really make the jewelry stand out and eye catching. Necklace trees are a creative way of displaying beautiful necklaces for sale.

Choose the right size box to package sold jewelry. Jewelry boxes are made of a variety of materials such as craft paper boxes, clear top boxes, silver lined and velour-lined. There is just the right size box for every piece of jewelry whether it be a bracelet, a ring, a necklace or pendant. Choosing the right size box and a box made of high quality material can make a huge difference in how your customers feel about you after they have purchased.

Regardless of what kind of jewelry you sell, fashion costume jewelry or high end jewelry, you can use whatever kind of high quality box you want. For example, use a velour-covered metal box for fashion jewelry sales just to add a bit of up-scale to the sale.

Silver, gold, blue, red and many other different foil-like paper boxes with cotton padding in the bottom of the box works well for fashion jewelry or high end jewelry. Add a tiny bow or wrap around bow to your package for more detail. You should, however, always choose the appropriate size to fit the jewelry pieces perfectly.

You can even make your own signature line of boxes in which you package your sales to give your jewelry line a more unique presentation.
If you choose to use paper boxes, be sure you choose high quality paper boxes. If you package your jewelry sales poorly, your merchandise will be viewed as poor quality as well. I know from a first hand experience with the package I received in the mail that was poorly packaged and the jewelry was destroyed due to the poor packaging. My first thought was, “carelessness and poor quality.” Don’t let the same thing happen to you with your jewelry sales.

Purchase jewelry boxes at wholesale for a cost-effective way to add an extra finishing touch for your customers, and if sending through the mail, always remember to wrap in bubble wrap and send in a secure bubble wrapped envelope or box. In the end, you will be glad you spent the extra time and money to do so.

Retail Stores Will Stand Apart From Everyone Else When Offering Handmade Jewelry

One excellent way of being different or somewhat set apart from other jewelry retail stores is to offer “handmade jewelry.” The jewelry pieces and jewelry collections available from individual jewelry artists is endless. Offering handmade jewelry in your jewelry retail store surely provides an opportunity for shoppers to find truly unique gift ideas. People will begin to see your jewlery shop is not just like all the rest. Doesn’t it get a little boring to see the same styles of jewelry in every jewelry store you go into? Shoppers feel the same way and when shopping for the person who has “everything” already, a unique handmade piece of jewelry or a collection of jewelry can sometimes break this boring cycle of having the very same thing everybody else has. You might even look for a handmade jewelry artist who will agree to make specific styles of jewelry just for your shop! People like finding items for themselves and to gift to others in which are hard to find just any place on the block. Unique is one of the keys to making sales!

Consider partnering with several handmade jewelry artists to provide your customers with a variety of jewelry styles and collections. Our markets are simply bubbling over the top with materials that provides handmade jewelry artists an endless array of creating possibilities. You might even set up a special display or corner offering customers a variety of materials such as cabochons, stones, beads, shells, jewelry findings, just everything that will also draw in the handmade artist to purchase their supplies from YOU.

I think it is important to create legal contracts with your chosen handmade jewelry artists to assure your jewelry store alone will receive their creations. Do some research about what people like to wear or give as gifts and have regular meetings with your chosen handmade jewelry artists to help supply you with items your customers will purchase. Sets of matching items such as earrings, necklace, bracelet, rings, key rings and other items helps to build your final sales. Your goal is to create repeat buyers from the casual buyer as well as to keep bringing in new buyers.

As always, remember to offer excellent one on one personal service. Set up your jewelry areas with comfortable chairs, tables and mirrors and spend time with your customers helping them choose pieces that are right for them or to give to others as gifts. Offer beautiful gift wrapping services as a free service. People are so busy these days, it is often an added incentive to visit the jewelry store that will end the sale with a beautifully wrapped package ready for the gift giving.

More often than not, there are handmade jewelry artists in nearby locations. I suggest making personal relationships with these professionals to get the very best and most unique for your own handmade jewelry sales. Of course, online as well, there are many handmade jewelry artists you can find.

Knowing the specific techniques and materials your chosen handmade jewelry artists used is also a great benefit when offering pieces to customers. Spend time talking to customers about the pieces of jewelry you offer, how it was made, and how many are available, exactly what materials were used in the making of the piece….all this information is helpful when trying to sell your handmade jewelry pieces. The better a person is able to connect to your jewelry pieces the easier it is to make and build sales as well as gain repeat customers.

Your goal as a jewelry store is to entice customers to come back to you for that special anniversary, birthday or wedding gift. Change your displays and offerings of pieces, contract for a certain number of pieces and then move onto another line or even another jewelry artist for new lines and displays. If you find a handmade jewely line that sells exceptionally well, then off that on a continous basis.

It is my feeling that whatever the occasion, handcrafted jewelry just never goes out of style and will help keep customers coming back to you and is definitely an option to help you stand apart from all the rest!

Markets for Selling Handmade Jewelry

Sell handmade jewelry to several different markets. If you think your handmade jewelry business will be a grand success just selling to friends, family and neighbors, you are in for a big surprise, unless, of course you are someone like Princess Diana or a very famous person who has more than the usual amount of friends and fans.

In that case, you probably would not be trying to “sell” much of anything. You probably would have a staff of people to market your products, a staff of people for each and every aspect of your business.

For those of us who are stand alone one man or one woman shows, we have to think outside the box of family, friends and fans, as those are our warm market and the warm market is soon exhausted. You will have to find ways to be able to sell to complete strangers who do not buy from you just because it is YOU selling something today or tomorrow, but because they actually like what you got to sell and buy it for their own purposes.

Friends and family are good to have to get you started, but look out for a disappointment. A few 100 friends is not going to make you a successful business. You will need to learn how to sell to strangers if you want to succeed at any kind of business venture long term. With that said, never put all your eggs into just one basket!

Social networking is great for connecting to “people you know” but not in daily contact with and also for connecting with people you do not know yet you would like to sell to also. Social networking is one of the easiest and best ways for free advertising.

Develop professional web pages to showcase your one of a kind jewelry designs, collections and projects. Advertise and market your website online and to the general public. This represents the actual and true “selling” of your product. Word of mouth from friends and family is great. Professional web pages is even better.

Attend art and craft shows, indoor and outdoor festivals, church exhibitions, school exhibitions, any kind of special event going on around you in which you can set up a business table showcasing your handmade jewelry designs.

You will soon find these kind of activities are the actual “roots” for potential customers, sales, and growth of your business. Be sure and have handy some nicely printed flyers and business cards to hand out with each purchase. Events such as these listed are a very important form of selling as you are in direct contact with your customers.

Invest in a nice mirror for your business table set up at these kind of events so your customers can try on your jewelry designs. Some people just won’t buy without seeing in person, and these kind of events are perfect for this type of market. As you participate in the events you will meet other people who will introduce you to even more selling activities and events opening up more and more potential markets to sell. The life of an independent salesperson is a busy one!

Handmade jewelry is the perfect kind of item or product to host home parties. Jewelry selling parties can be more fun than baby and wedding showers. According to what social class you live among or culture you live among, you can create a party similar to holding a baby shower, wedding shower or Tupperware party. Play a few games. Serve some finger foods and refreshments.

Private parties are nice get togethers usually for close friends and family members. You might even ask for sponsors within your groups of close friends and relatives to hold parties for you and reward their efforts with free gifts of jewelry in exchange for their sales. Selling handmade jewelry in a home party setting is similar to selling cosmetics, Tupperware and many other products. It can be lots of fun and add up to lots of sales. Keep plenty of business cards, brochures or fliers handy at all your parties.

Another market to think about is local clothing and boutique shops. You might even contract with one of them on a regular basis to provide them with select jewelry designs not offered anywhere else.

Gift shops in hotels, hospitals, theatres and airports may be another area to market your handmade jewelry. Some of them are always on the look out for “unique merchandise” not found elsewhere. Observe who their customers are and try to come up with collections or designs that will meet the needs of people who shop with them.

Offer gift certificates and special discounts and consider this avenue one of the “loving” ways to continue sales of your handmade jewelry pieces and collections. Close sales with a free gift. I can safely say you probably will never run into a person who would refuse a free gift as everybody loves a bargain. Free gifts is a great way to say “thank you” in a way that stays in a customer’s mind.

If you are selling in person and have the facilities to do so, offer gift wrapping as a free service to help close your sales and hopefully invite the person back for more sales. Try to have a variety of wrapping paper on hand, such as birthday, wedding, or anniversary, even graduation wrapping paper. Many people purchase handmade jewelry as a gift. It would be nice to be able to offer the appropriate wrapping paper to match their gift giving event.
