Sell handmade jewelry to several different markets. If you think your handmade jewelry business will be a grand success just selling to friends, family and neighbors, you are in for a big surprise, unless, of course you are someone like Princess Diana or a very famous person who has more than the usual amount of friends and fans.
In that case, you probably would not be trying to “sell” much of anything. You probably would have a staff of people to market your products, a staff of people for each and every aspect of your business.
For those of us who are stand alone one man or one woman shows, we have to think outside the box of family, friends and fans, as those are our warm market and the warm market is soon exhausted. You will have to find ways to be able to sell to complete strangers who do not buy from you just because it is YOU selling something today or tomorrow, but because they actually like what you got to sell and buy it for their own purposes.
Friends and family are good to have to get you started, but look out for a disappointment. A few 100 friends is not going to make you a successful business. You will need to learn how to sell to strangers if you want to succeed at any kind of business venture long term. With that said, never put all your eggs into just one basket!
Social networking is great for connecting to “people you know” but not in daily contact with and also for connecting with people you do not know yet you would like to sell to also. Social networking is one of the easiest and best ways for free advertising.
Develop professional web pages to showcase your one of a kind jewelry designs, collections and projects. Advertise and market your website online and to the general public. This represents the actual and true “selling” of your product. Word of mouth from friends and family is great. Professional web pages is even better.
Attend art and craft shows, indoor and outdoor festivals, church exhibitions, school exhibitions, any kind of special event going on around you in which you can set up a business table showcasing your handmade jewelry designs.
You will soon find these kind of activities are the actual “roots” for potential customers, sales, and growth of your business. Be sure and have handy some nicely printed flyers and business cards to hand out with each purchase. Events such as these listed are a very important form of selling as you are in direct contact with your customers.
Invest in a nice mirror for your business table set up at these kind of events so your customers can try on your jewelry designs. Some people just won’t buy without seeing in person, and these kind of events are perfect for this type of market. As you participate in the events you will meet other people who will introduce you to even more selling activities and events opening up more and more potential markets to sell. The life of an independent salesperson is a busy one!
Handmade jewelry is the perfect kind of item or product to host home parties. Jewelry selling parties can be more fun than baby and wedding showers. According to what social class you live among or culture you live among, you can create a party similar to holding a baby shower, wedding shower or Tupperware party. Play a few games. Serve some finger foods and refreshments.
Private parties are nice get togethers usually for close friends and family members. You might even ask for sponsors within your groups of close friends and relatives to hold parties for you and reward their efforts with free gifts of jewelry in exchange for their sales. Selling handmade jewelry in a home party setting is similar to selling cosmetics, Tupperware and many other products. It can be lots of fun and add up to lots of sales. Keep plenty of business cards, brochures or fliers handy at all your parties.
Another market to think about is local clothing and boutique shops. You might even contract with one of them on a regular basis to provide them with select jewelry designs not offered anywhere else.
Gift shops in hotels, hospitals, theatres and airports may be another area to market your handmade jewelry. Some of them are always on the look out for “unique merchandise” not found elsewhere. Observe who their customers are and try to come up with collections or designs that will meet the needs of people who shop with them.
Offer gift certificates and special discounts and consider this avenue one of the “loving” ways to continue sales of your handmade jewelry pieces and collections. Close sales with a free gift. I can safely say you probably will never run into a person who would refuse a free gift as everybody loves a bargain. Free gifts is a great way to say “thank you” in a way that stays in a customer’s mind.
If you are selling in person and have the facilities to do so, offer gift wrapping as a free service to help close your sales and hopefully invite the person back for more sales. Try to have a variety of wrapping paper on hand, such as birthday, wedding, or anniversary, even graduation wrapping paper. Many people purchase handmade jewelry as a gift. It would be nice to be able to offer the appropriate wrapping paper to match their gift giving event.
